Witness Bonjisi was born in 1975 in Mutoko, a small town in Zimbabwe's Mashonaland East province. Witness was inspired to sculpt by his late elder brother Lameck Bonjisi and he began sculpting in 1992 under the guidance of the late Nicholas Mukomberanwa. As Witness learned his ancestors' art form, he infused it with his own personal distinctive style and creativity. He began sculpting his own pieces in 1997. Witness uses his imagination to create sculptures that are both beautiful and powerful, allowing the natural shape of the stone to guide him. In contrast to the earlier Shona artists, whose work was far more primitive in nature, his revolutionized artistic expression has turned his style of sculpture into a more contemporary form. Witness has attended workshops in the United States and Switzerland, and his work has been displayed around the globe including France, the United States, England, Germany, the Netherlands and China. His sculptures can be found in galleries and private collections around the world.
